Options for the UPC Mobile Subscription
The mobile market accounts for only a small portion of UPC’s overall offerings; the company also serves the TV, internet, and landline markets. For this reason, the provider focuses primarily on special bundled packages. This is particularly beneficial for customers who also get their internet service from UPC.
All plans come in two versions: a mobile-only plan and a combined mobile and internet plan. Generally speaking, the plans differ mainly in terms of the included data allowance and the available international options. We’ve taken a look at the options and have put together an overview for you here:
UPC Swiss 500 MB
The most affordable UPC Mobile plan comes with 500 MB of data. Even this plan includes unlimited calls and texts . If you combine this plan with an internet package, your mobile data allowance increases to 1 GB. As the name suggests, this offer is valid only in Switzerland; roaming is not included. This mobile plan is right for you if you…
- …a very good deal
- …use mobile internet only occasionally, for example to check emails.
- …rarely travel abroad.
UPC Swiss 2 GB
The next tier up includes 2 GB of data; otherwise, it doesn’t differ much from the 500-MB plan. Calls and texts are again unlimited within Switzerland, and UPC Internet subscribers get twice as much data—4 GB. Choose this UPC Mobile plan if you…
- …a basic package that offers good value for money
- …the mobile internet, in addition to email, for chatting and social media every now and then
- …rarely travel abroad.
UPC Swiss 40 GB
With unlimited calls and texts plus 40 GB of data, this plan is UPC Mobile’s most comprehensive subscription for use within Switzerland. For UPC Internet users, mobile data is even completely unlimited. However, it does not include coverage for international use; for that, the Europe plans are the right choice. This is the right plan for you if you…
- …are willing to pay a higher price for better performance.
- …use mobile internet to stream music or watch Netflix shows.
- …rarely travel abroad.
UPC Europe
UPC Europe offers the same 40 GB data plan as Swiss 40 GB, but also includes unlimited calls and texts from Europe to Switzerland and within European countries. Additionally, 10 GB of international data is included. This UPC mobile plan is right for you if you…
- …wanthigh performance at a reasonable price.
- …mobile internet for music, videos, and movies
- …use your smartphone regularly while abroad.
UPC Europe Plus
The largest and most expensive UPC mobile plan is Europe Plus. Here’s what it includes: Unlimited calls and texts aren’t just available within Switzerland and within a single EU country—you can also make calls freely between different EU countries. The plan also covers other countries, such as the U.S. and Australia. Choose this plan if you…
- …who want high performance and a smooth experience and are willing to pay a higher price for it.
- …mobile internet for music streaming services as well as Netflix and others
- …travel frequently between EU countries and don’t want to worry about extra costs
Does the UPC mobile plan include roaming packages?
UPC has already catered to frequent travelers with its two plans, Europe and Europe Plus. However, since not everyone is constantly on the go, there are also individual packages for occasional vacations, which can be activated by sending an SMS to 872:
- Roaming Voice Europe: 60 minutes within your destination country and from your destination country to Switzerland, valid for 30 days
- Roaming Data Europe: 250 MB of data in Europe, valid for 30 days
- Roaming Data USA/Canada: 1 GB of data in the U.S. and Canada, valid for 30 days
UPC Mobile Plan with a Smartphone
Every UPC mobile plan comes with a phone upon request. The selection ranges from the latest devices from premium manufacturers like Apple and Samsung to Huawei, as well as affordable models from Xiaomi or Oppo.
You can either pay for the smartphone right away or choose a 24-month payment plan. You decide how much to pay as a down payment.
No UPC prepaid plans available
Unfortunately, we have some bad news for fans of prepaid plans: UPC focuses exclusively on mobile phone subscriptions, so there is no UPC prepaid plan available. If you're looking for a prepaid plan, you'll need to turn to other mobile providers in Switzerland.
Who should consider a UPC Mobile subscription?
UPC has set itself the goal of offering competitive, modern mobile plans that are also practical for use abroad. You’ll find what you’re looking for here, especially if you identify with one of these usage patterns:
- You already use UPC Internet and are now adding a mobile plan to your service.
- You travel a lot within the EU and want to use your smartphone abroad without incurring additional costs.
- You don't need top-of-the-line equipment, but you want a high-quality product that offers good value for the price.
- You want to buy a smartphone with a contract and have plenty of options to choose from.
What else you should know about UPC Mobile
To help you decide whether a UPC Mobile subscription is right for you, we’ve compiled some additional information below about the network, sign-up, your customer account, and cancellation.
The Network: UPC and Swisscom
UPC and its parent company, Liberty Global, have a long history of mergers and partnerships as a provider, which have repeatedly shaped their offerings. Most recently, in 2019, the provider switched from the Salt network to that of market leader Swisscom. UPC cited better network coverage and greater reliability as the reasons for the move. In fact, Swisscom offers one of the best networks in Switzerland.
Here's how registration works
You can sign up for a UPC Mobile subscription either in person at a UPC partner store or online. We recommend signing up online, as it saves you time and effort and allows you to sign up at any time.
UPC will handle the cancellation of your old contract and the number porting process. You will then receive your activation information and an all-in-one SIM card by mail.
Once you've inserted the SIM card and entered the SIM PIN and activation code, your subscription is ready to use.
Subscription management with My UPC and the Connect app
If you want to view information about your current plan or make changes, you can do so through your “My UPC” online account. Here are some of the actions you can take in your online account:
- View bills and recurring expenses
- Update or change your subscription
- Lock/unlock SIM card
- Change personal information
- Change payment method or payment date
Another option is to manage your subscriptions directly in the Connect app, which is available for download on Google Play and the App Store. The app offers the advantage of letting you quickly access key information about your subscription anytime, anywhere.
How can I cancel my UPC Mobile subscription?
The notice period for UPC is usually two months. The easiest option is to sign up for a new subscription with another provider.
In this case, they will handle the cancellation and number porting. Otherwise, you can cancel by phone through customer service at 0800 900 210. There is also an online cancellation form, though the wait time is longer when using this method.
Please note: All UPC subscriptions have a minimum contract term of 12 months; some even have a 24-month term. If you wish to cancel your contract early, you will still be required to pay all installments until the end of the minimum contract term.
UPC Mobile Plan: A modern plan at an affordable price
The UPC Mobile plan is recommended for virtually everyone; it’s suitable for both basic and more advanced needs. Existing UPC customers, in particular, benefit from bundled offers when signing up for a mobile plan. Only if you’re looking for top-tier premium service or travel frequently within the EU might you be better off with competitor Swisscom. Otherwise, you’ll find a high-quality network, sensible rate plans, and good service at a more than reasonable price.
