TikTok, Instagram, and other apps can use up a lot of data. A cell phone plan with unlimited data—do I even need that?
Well, when do you actually need a cell phone plan with unlimited data? Certainly not just for occasional emailing or checking the weather. However, if you regularly use Instagram , send videos via WhatsApp, or want to stream movies using mobile data, you should consider getting an unlimited data plan!
That data allowance is enough for that
“I don’t really use the internet that often—I don’t watch movies”: If this sounds like you, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the basic data plan is enough. Various apps can also use up a lot of data.

- … WhatsApp messages: 500 MB per month, provided you only send text, voice messages, and images.
- … WhatsApp calls: A 10-minute call uses up 10 MB.
- … WhatsApp video calls: A 10-minute video call uses 50 MB of data.
- … Netflix: Watching Netflix for 10 minutes uses between 50 MB and 1 GB (Ultra HD), depending on the resolution selected.
- … YouTube: A 10-minute video requires between 20 and 80 MB (depending on the resolution).
- … Spotify: Streaming 10 minutes of music in standard quality uses about 7 MB of data. In the highest quality, it uses up to 20 MB per 10 minutes.
- … Instagram: Be careful—scrolling for just 10 minutes here can use up 60 MB. So don’t underestimate Instagram! It uses a bit less in data-saving mode.
- … TikTok: TikTok uses even more data—it consumes 140 MB every 10 minutes. Even with data-saving mode enabled, it still uses about half that amount.
By the way, services like Spotify, Amazon Prime, Sky, and Netflix now also offer a download feature. This means you can download movies or music over your home Wi-Fi network and avoid using mobile data while on the go. The downside: Your device must, of course, have sufficient storage capacity.
Here’s another tip: It’s a good idea to track your data usage over the course of a week or even a month. Some devices already display this usage explicitly on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. If your smartphone doesn’t do this, you can simply reset your data and check after 5–7 days of average use to see how much data you’ve used.
