A good flat-rate plan is worth its weight in gold! Well, almost—but it’s certainly extremely convenient to have unlimited calls and/or mobile data. Here you’ll find all the information you need about mobile flat-rate plans in Switzerland: Is an Allnet flat-rate plan worth it? Should you go for an internet flat-rate plan or a voice flat-rate plan? We also have some tips on how to find the most affordable flat-rate mobile plan for you.

What Is a Flat Rate? The Basics of Data Plans and More

First, a quick note:“Unlimited”is a matter of interpretation when it comes to high-speed internet. Such plans are often capped at a certain data allowance, and speeds are throttled once that limit is exceeded.

Is a mobile phone flat rate worth it?

Do you browse the web and make calls regularly? If so, we highly recommend a flat-rate plan. That way, you’re covered for any eventuality and can even have longer conversations without getting a sky-high bill at the end of the month.

It’s best to check your most recent monthly bills to see which services you’ve used most frequently on average. This often provides a more realistic picture of your usage patterns than simply assuming, “I don’t need that much.”

Another nice feature is that you can usually keep your current phone number when you switch to a flat-rate plan. The new provider will handle the number porting process, provided you notify them of your request in a timely manner—that is, before canceling your old plan.

In summary, we can say:

  • A flat-rate plan is worth it if you make a lot of calls, browse the internet, or send text messages on a regular basis.
  • A flat-rate plan isn't worth it if you only use your cell phone for a few minutes a month. In that case, a prepaid plan will be cheaper.

Not sure which plan best suits your usage? Then a quick comparison of plans using our filter on the left side of the page will definitely help!

What is the cheapest cell phone plan with an unlimited data plan?

You may have already guessed: there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. That’s another reason why we highly recommend our comparison filter, as it allows you to select exactly the features you actually use.

For now, you’re probably the best judge of what kind of plan suits your needs—if you make a lot of calls, a voice plan is your best bet, and if you browse the web frequently on your phone, a data plan is obviously the way to go. If you use both services about equally, you’ll want a combo plan. You’ll find a few examples further down in the text!

All-Network Flat-Rate Cell Phone

With Allnet flat-rate plans, domestic calls to all networks are included

All-network plans for cell phones

The name says it all with Allnet Flats, because these plans cover the cost of domestic calls to all networks. So it doesn’t matter if, for example, you’re calling Swisscom from an M-Budget SIM card. You really can’t go wrong with an Allnet Flat—quite the opposite, in fact, since it’s unlikely that most of your contacts are with the same provider as you.

Comparison of Phone Flat Rates

With a flat-rate calling plan, you pay a fixed amount and can talk on the phone for as long as you like. With some providers, you can even call for free when you call someone who uses the same provider. It’s best to make sure your plan includes all-network coverage, as otherwise you may incur unexpectedly high charges when calling another network.

We also recommend taking the following factors into account when choosing a flat-rate phone plan:

  • Customer service hotlines, as these are usually not included in the flat-rate plan and each call to such a helpline incurs a charge
  • the billing intervals for phone calls—for example, whether a partial minute is charged as a full minute
  • network coverage in the areas where you use your flat rate most often

Even the supposedly best flat-rate plan is of little use if the connection keeps dropping during calls or is generally poor. It certainly can’t hurt to quickly check the network quality with the provider in question.

Data Plan: How Much Data Is Enough?

For many people today, using a cell phone without mobile data is unthinkable. So it’s all the better that there are flat-rate plans for mobile internet ! But which plan is right for which needs—and do you actually need a data plan to go with your smartphone? Here are the most important tips at a glance!

Data Allowance - Our Tips
  • Internet plans range from 200 MB to unlimited GB.
  • If you regularly browse the web and check emails on your smartphone, you should opt for a data plan with at least 500 MB.
  • If you surf the web frequently and want to stream videos or music, among other things, you should opt for a significantly higher plan— up to 10 GB.
  • If you mainly send WhatsApp messages, 100 MB of data will be more than enough.
  • If you use WhatsApp frequently and regularly send or receive files, the 200 MB plan is a better choice.
  • In addition to data volume, upload and download speeds also play a role. They determine how fast you can browse the internet.
  • Some internet flat-rate plans are severely throttled once a certain data limit is reached.

By the way, if WhatsApp is your top priority, you can look for a plan that offers unlimited data for this app.

But to return to the original question: No, of course you don’t necessarily need an unlimited data plan just because you use a smartphone. It simply depends on your individual usage.

Unlimited data abroad: enjoy your vacation worry-free

Unlimited plans for Switzerland or for Europe?

Unlimited plans

Unlimited domestic calling minutes and data are all well and good, but what about using your phone abroad? If you ask yourself this question right from the start, you’re likely to be best off with an international flat-rate plan.

However, once again, it all depends on how much you plan to use your flat-rate plan while abroad. If it’s just for a vacation, a flat-rate plan limited to a specific period will suffice.

However, if you regularly make calls within Switzerland or to other countries, it’s worth considering additional calling plans. For example, Swisscom’s inOne mobile plans offer such plans for calls from Switzerland to the EU, the U.S., or Canada.

Prepaid flat-rate plans in Switzerland

It doesn't always have to be a cell phone plan with a minimum contract term—not even when it comes to flat-rate plans! Prepaid flat-rate plans remain popular.

With this plan, you pay for 24 hours and can make unlimited calls and use mobile data anywhere in Switzerland during that time. Alternatively, this plan is available for 30 or 90 days.

Coop Mobile Flat, Swisscom & Co.: Flat-rate plans in Switzerland

If you're still unsure whether a flat-rate plan is the right choice for you, keep reading: We've put together a few examples for you. Of course, your options don't end with these three flat-rate plans!

Coop Mobile Swiss Flat

Formerly known as Mobile Swiss Flat, this flat-rate plan is now called Coop Mobile Subscription. With this plan, you can

  • Unlimited calls (Switzerland, Liechtenstein)
  • Send unlimited text messages (Switzerland, Liechtenstein)
  • Surf the web with 2.5 GB per month

Coop uses the Swisscom network. It’s good to know that while the data allowance is limited, it doesn’t expire. The mobile plan costs about 30 CHF per month.

inOne mobile: Swisscom flat rates

Swisscom promises that with the inOne mobile plan , you can “surf and make calls without limits within Switzerland and within Europe.” You have a choice of three plans here:

  • Mobile Basic
  • Mobile Go
  • Mobile Premium

The inOne mobile plans range in price from 40 CHF to 180 CHF per month. If you would like an add-on package (e.g., more mobile data or international calling minutes), additional monthly charges will apply.

There are certain peculiarities here as well that we don’t want to withhold from you as you make your decision:

  • The flat rate can be combined with other Swisscom services, and you'll receive a discounted package price.
  • Swisscom is working full steam ahead on a nationwide 5Gnetwork. This is particularly relevant for frequent internet users.

Considering that the Swisscom network was once again named named the best network , a flat-rate plan with this provider is certainly not a bad choice—provided you’re willing to pay a little more than you would with other providers if necessary.

Cheap calls in Switzerland: the perfect cell phone flat rate

Swiss mobile carriers know that more is more! As a result, there’s a wide range of mobile data plans available. Depending on your usage, you can save a lot of money if you shop around carefully. It doesn’t have to take much time—just try our plan comparison filter on the left side of the page!

Here’s another tip: When looking for the right flat-rate plan, always keep an eye out for special promotions! This can sometimes save you 10 CHF or more per month—and for a long time to come. With that in mind, we hope you enjoy your new flat-rate plan, which you’re sure to find quickly using our plan comparison tool!
