Aldi Mobile 2024: An Overview of Prepaid Plans and Mobile Phone Subscriptions

Whether it’s Aldi Talk (Germany), HoT (Austria), or Aldi Suisse Mobile: Aldi has been offering prepaid mobile plans in the DACH region for quite some time. We take a closer look at Aldi Mobile in Switzerland: Who are these prepaid plans best suited for, and what are the terms and conditions? If you’re considering signing up for an Aldi mobile plan, you’ll find the most important answers here.

Is a prepaid plan or mobile phone subscription from Aldi Mobile right for me?

First things first: strictly speaking, Aldi Mobile only offers prepaid plans. As the name suggests, prepaid means you pay for your usage in advance. So you top up your account with credit, which you can then use to make calls, send texts, or browse the web. Once your credit runs out, you can top up your account again with Aldi Mobile.

My team and I will answer all your questions about your new cell phone subscription. We offer free advice in Swiss German. We look forward to your call, daily from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on 044 505 54 10.

However, you can put together your own mobile phone plan by signing up for Smart Combo packages. These packages are automatically renewed each month until you cancel them. The cost is deducted from your account balance. If your balance runs out, the package will no longer be renewed. After that, you’ll be charged the standard rate for calls.

Bottom line: Aldi Suisse Mobile’s offerings are aimed at cost-conscious and flexible users. If you’re looking for a traditional monthly cell phone plan that’s automatically billed to your bank account, you’re better off checking out other mobile providers in Switzerland.

The standard terms and conditions at Aldi Mobile Switzerland

If you do not opt for a bundle package, the following terms and conditions apply by default at Aldi Mobile:

  • Calls and text messages within the Aldi network are free.
  • Calls to other networks cost CHF 0.24 (mobile) or CHF 0.14 (landline) per minute.
  • Each text message costs 0.10 CHF.
  • Mobile internet costs 0.09 CHF per MB.

However, this applies only within the country. For certain neighboring countries, there are still special, more affordable rates available, while other international rates are significantly more expensive, depending on the region (1–3).

For example, if you call Switzerland from the UK (Region 1), you’ll pay 0.80 CHF per minute and 0.50 CHF for a text message. If you want to call Switzerland from a country in Region 3 (e.g., Brazil), it will cost you 3.70 CHF per minute. Without a roaming package, the costs can really add up.

Tip: Since standard plans aren't usually particularly attractive, it's worth checking out the bundle packages and savings options that Aldi Suisse Mobile has to offer. We took a closer look at them.

Aldi Prepaid Switzerland – Smart Plans and Combo Packages

As mentioned earlier, the Smart plans are Aldi Mobile’s version of a cell phone plan. The advantage of this is that payments are only deducted monthly until your credit balance is used up. Additionally, all plans can be canceled at any time.

Cell phone with the Aldi logo

Aldi offers affordable cell phone plans for budget-conscious shoppers.

You can also easily switch between the available options. To activate or deactivate a subscription, send a text message with "START" or "STOP" and the name of the package to 4466.

In addition, there are several data or roaming combo packages available that are purchased as one-time purchases and do not renew automatically. They expire automatically after 30 days. After that (or even while they are still active), they can be purchased again.

Aldi Mobile Smart Plans for Everyday Use

Aldi Mobile offers three smart combo plans that provide cheaper calling and data compared to the standard rate. All plans include unlimited calls and texts; the main difference lies in the amount of data included.

In addition, the two larger plans, Smart M and Smart L, include a roaming package. This allows you to make calls and browse the internet at lower rates even when you're abroad. Important to know: All three Smart plans renew automatically until your credit runs out or you cancel the respective plan.

  Smart S Smart M Smart L

For frequent internet users, the mobile data plans called Aldi SURF are particularly well-suited. Here, you have three options to choose from, depending on how much additional data you need. The SURF plans are valid for 30 days and do not renew automatically.

  SURF 1000 SURF 3000 SURF 8000
Data (national) 1 GB 3 GB 8 GB
Price per 30 days 9,90 CHF 14,90 CHF 24,90 CHF

International Rates and Roaming with Aldi Mobile Prepaid

Using your cell phone abroad can get very expensive very quickly, even if you just want to make a quick call or check bus schedules. That’s why having the right roaming plan is a good idea. Depending on whether you only need internet access or also want to make calls, Aldi Mobile offers various options. Roaming plans expire after 30 days and are not automatically renewed.

Roaming 500 Roaming 2000 Smart Roaming
Mobile calls (outgoing and incoming) / / 100 minutes
Mobile Data 500 MB 2 GB 2 GB
Text message / / 100 SMS
Price per 30 days 9,90 CHF 19,90 CHF 29,90 CHF

By the way, all combo plans include “data rollover.” This means that any unused data is carried over to the next month as long as your mobile plan remains active. It even carries over if you switch plans. However, if you cancel your subscription, any remaining data will expire. The same applies if your subscription automatically expires because you’ve run out of credit.

How the Aldi Prepaid SIM Card Works

If you want to make calls with Aldi Suisse Mobile, you’ll first need a starter kit. You have two options: You can either sign up directly on the provider’s website or purchase your starter kit at a nearby Aldi store.

SIM Card Registration

Cell phone with a focus on the camera

You can easily register your SIM card using your phone's camera.

To register on the website, you’ll need a camera (webcam or smartphone camera) to take a photo and a form of ID (e.g., passport). Aldi Suisse Mobile will then need a photo of your ID and a video selfie. And that’s it—your SIM card is registered!

To purchase a SIM card in a store, all you need to bring is a form of ID. The starter pack costs CHF 9.99 and includes CHF 20 in starting credit.

The package naturally includes the SIM card, which is a 3-in-1 version so it fits in any cell phone.

Number portability

You can keep your current phone number for free when you switch. Simply enter your old provider and phone number during the online sign-up process. Aldi Suisse Mobile will handle canceling your old plan and transferring your number to your new Aldi SIM card. During this time, you’ll receive a temporary phone number that you can use to make calls, send texts, or browse the internet.

How to top up your Aldi Mobile account and check your balance

The starter pack, which includes an Aldi prepaid SIM card, already comes with 20 CHF in credit. You have several options for each subsequent top-up:

  • Top up via your Aldi Mobile online account using a credit card or TWINT
  • Purchase of gift cards at an Aldi store (20/30/50 CHF)
  • Topping up your balance at SBB ticket machines

You can view your remaining balance either in your Aldi Mobile online account or by entering *147*# followed by the call button on your smartphone.

Tip: If you’ve signed up for a Smart Plan, it will only renew automatically if you have enough credit remaining. So always keep an eye on your current credit balance. That way, you won’t risk losing your remaining data allowance because your Aldi Prepaid Plan was canceled unintentionally.

Please be careful if you don’t use your SIM card for an extended period: While your credit balance technically has no expiration date, your phone number itself does! If you do not make any calls or send any SMS/MMS messages for more than 12 months, Aldi Mobile will block the SIM card. At this point, it can still be reactivated; after another 6 months, the block becomes permanent. The credit expires and the phone number is reassigned.

How do I cancel my Aldi cell phone plan?

Red lettering: Stop

You can cancel your Aldi mobile phone plan with a quick text message.

You can cancel a Smart add-on package at any time by sending a text message with the word "STOP" and the package name to 4466. After that, the package will remain active only until the end of the 30-day period.

Would you like to cancel your entire service because you’re switching providers? In that case, you’ll need to either contact Aldi Suisse Mobile by phone or send a cancellation letter by mail.

Please note: Any remaining balance will expire after cancellation! Since a refund is not possible, please try to use up your balance before switching providers.

A Comparison of Prepaid Plans from Aldi, Lidl Connect, and M-Budget

Aldi Mobile, Lidl Connect, and M-Budget often compete for customers with their prepaid plans , but in reality, the differences between the three providers aren’t that significant.

  • M-Budget may seem more expensive at first glance, but it offers very good rates for international calls.
  • Lidl is pretty affordable overall.
  • Aldi has the edge when it comes to the data.

So choose based on the features you use most often. Here’s a quick comparison of plans:

Aldi Mobile Prepaid Lidl Smart Prepaid M-Budget Prepaid
Capitalization costs 9,99 CHF 9,95 CHF 19,80 CHF
Calls within your own network free free 0.28 CHF/minute
Calls to other networks 0.24 CHF/min (mobile)
0.14 CHF/min (landline)
0.15 CHF/min 0.28 CHF/minute
(Domestic and international)
Text message 0,10 CHF 0,15 CHF 0.10 CHF
(Domestic and international)
Data 0.09 CHF/MB Additional package required 0.28 CHF/MB

Aldi Mobile Switzerland – Affordable Plans for Flexible Users

Since it allows users to spend only as much as they have in their account balance, Aldi Suisse Mobile is particularly well-suited for budget-conscious consumers and occasional smartphone users. Those who value the ability to cancel or switch their plan at any time are also well-served by an Aldi Mobile subscription.

One drawback is that if you remain inactive for too long, your number will be deactivated and reassigned to another user. Since this only happens after 18 months, the average user shouldn’t be too affected by this. You also need to keep a close eye on your account balance if you don’t want your data allowance to expire because your savings plan is ending.

That said, aside from these conditions, Aldi Mobile offers a plan with good value for money. As long as you keep in mind that Aldi Suisse Mobile isn’t a premium provider but a discount carrier, you can’t go wrong with an Aldi prepaid card.

Yes, you can keep your old number. Just provide it when you sign up for your Aldi mobile plan.
These are regional providers of Aldi mobile phone plans. HoT operates in Austria, Aldi Talk in Germany, and Aldi Suisse Mobile in Switzerland. Each provider’s offers are valid only in their respective country.
Aldi Mobile Switzerland uses Sunrise's mobile network.
You can either buy a starter pack at an Aldi store or register on the provider's website.
The minimum age is 12. For younger children, a parent may register them under their own name.
No, Aldi Suisse Mobile does not currently offer mobile phone plans that include a smartphone.
You can top up your account either through your Aldi Mobile online account, using a voucher from an Aldi store, or at SBB ticket machines.
With "data rollover," unused data is carried over to the next month. However, this only applies as long as the mobile phone plan remains active. You can switch to a different plan, but any remaining data will expire if you cancel your service.
